The mountains that are to host the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games are among the most fascinating and most beautiful in the entire Alpine range. Over a century ago, they saw the introduction of skiing into Italy, and today they offer a huge choice of sports and leisure activities all year round. In winter, the classic sports available are downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snow-trekking, and in summer rambling and walking up to the peaks of the Susa, Pellice, Chisone and Germanasca valleys. The area is also famous for some of the region’s most significant historical sites: the Sacra di San Michele, the abbey of Novalesa and the forts of Exilles and Fenestrelle.
