Cities
Rivoli (TO)
Stately and elegant villas line the streets of the city of Rivoli, on the Paduan plain at the entrance to the Susa Valley. The town is set in woodland, which explains why every May, for three days, it hosts a festival dedicated to the ancient craft of wood carving. The streets of the old centre are transformed into a kind of “elves” workshop, with artists and craftsmen demonstrating their skills and displaying their exquisitely carved work. One of the most fascinating streets, Via Piol, with its distinctive and beautiful paving, runs straight through the heart of the oldest quarter. It is a delightful succession of interesting shops and invitingly cosy cafés, with a true architectural gem in the Collegiata of Santa Maria della Stella collegiate church. Rivoli’s medieval treasures include the residence of the Conte Verde (as Count Amedeo VI of Savoy was commonly known); the Bell Tower of the Antica Collegiata church; the Torre della Filanda (literally, the tower in the spinning mill),which was built in 1200 AD, and swallowed up by the factory buildings of the cotton mills in the nineteenth century; the Santa Croce church, which dates back to the turn of the 18th century and contains some traces of the monastery of a medieval order; and the famous castle, one of the “garland” of splendid Savoy residences surrounding Turin. Built on the ruins of a medieval dwelling, it was transformed into an elegant 18th century palace by court architect, Filippo Juvarra. In 1984 it became the Museum of Contemporary Art and the location of the fledgling Museum of Advertising.
