Bagnasco (CN)
The history of this town, a major communication route between Piedmont and Liguria, was not easy. In order to control it, a castle as well as an extensive fortification system were built in the 12th century, of which part of the ruins are still visible. Bagnasco was conquered by the Saracens and it was during this period that we find the origins of the “Bal do Sabre”, the dance of the sabers that is still done today by folk groups of the same name in Moorish clothing. The dance was created by the people to celebrate the chasing away of the invaders and has assumed, over time, the meaning of a hymn of fertility for the land. Another finding that testifies to the ancient strategic importance of Bagnasco is the 16rth century bridge in terra cotta and stone over the Tanaro, set up so that it can also carry water.
