Barge (CN)

Prehistoric men who chose to stop in the shelter of Mont Bracco and to leave drawings as testimony, can be considered the first residents of Barge. The network of trails running through it, which still allows one to discover very rich flora and fauna, explains the reasons for this choice. Besides this, in the woods surrounding Barge, grow the “bule”, a variety of porcini mushroom famous throughout Piedmont and the star of many local dishes. In 1511, even Leonardo da Vinci cites Monte Bracco for another one of its great riches, which has accompanied and sustained the economical development of the area for centuries: the quartzite and the gneiss in its caves, in fact, have been used for several centuries in the construction of homes and religious buildings. The town grew up where the Chiappera and the Infernotto rivers merge, where, over the centuries, two castles reinforced by citadels were built. Today, only the ruins of the military fortress remain, while a part of the cloister and the bell tower of the older castle, used in the 15th century as a Franciscan convent, still remain.
