Bastia Mondovì (CN)
Bastia is the gate of the Monregale Langhe and is the meeting point of many towns, hamlets, and scattered homes. During the Middle Ages, it was crossed by an important salt road and the wayfarers, once they arrived near the town, stopped at the San Fiorenzo Church used as a “pilgrim’s chapel”. This sacred place, built on the tomb of a saint and a jewel of Gothic architecture, houses one of Piedmont’s largest 15th century fresco cycles, which leaves visitors stunned. Made by more than one hand coming from the best popular schools of the 15th century, a good 326 meters of frescos – multicolored walls, simple art, deprived of frills, but rich in mysticism and with a profound religiosity that portrays the life and the Passion of Christ, scenes from the “Inferno” and “Paradise”, images of saints and evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and the stories of San Antonio and San Fiorenzo. Also the San Bernardo Shrine located in a panoramic position at 539 meters within the Langhe hills, which was built in memory to the fallen from the local independent partisan unit that took part in the War of Liberation, deserves a visit.
