Bellino (CN)
Bellino is the highest town in the Valle Varaita and is found in a small lateral valley just before the French border. The road doesn’t lead to any crossable pass and therefore, arriving in town means rediscovering a slower pace of life and an uncontaminated environment. Here, Provencal, the language of the Provencal troubadours, is still used at home. The town is like a true sanctuary of the rural architecture of the Western Alps and is made up of nine divisions (ruas). Its name comes from the Celtic god of light, Belenos. The solar archetype, in effect, is found in the decorative friezes of the homes, made in rosettes, girandoles, and stars as in the many sundials. These are found along the paths, painted on the walls of many private homes and chapels and are the custodians of popular traditions and wisdom. Bellino’s heritage of the gnome boasts more than thirty sundials entirely restored, made between 1735 and 1934 and two new quadrants from modern times. To complete the “solar Bellino” trip, an astronomic observatory was built in Mai di Brun, specifically in Celle.
