Cities
Bene Vagienna (CN)
The plan of the actual city dates back to the Middle Ages; still, in the outlying area of Roncaglia, traces of the Roman city of Augusta Bagiennorum can be found. The military control of Cisalpine Gaul region was probably entrusted to this colony as well as to Augusta Taurinorum (Turin), and to Augusta Praetorian (Aosta). The theater, the basilica, the remains of the aqueduct are the only testaments actually visible. A small archeological museum, with documentation of the main discoveries carried out, is set up in the 18th century palazzo Lucerna di Rora. The present town is almost entirely surrounded by medieval walls and the design of the neighborhoods also clearly follows a medieval plan. Here it is possible to see many buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries with a Baroque look. Visiting Bene Vagienna, its narrow lanes, its broad porticos, the fraternal orders, and its palazzos becomes, therefore, a trip through very diverse but rather striking eras and styles.
