Bistagno (AL)
The origins of Bistagno, a farming community in Alto Monferrato, dates back to the 13th century when the bishop of Acqui brought three hillside hamlets together and built a true and proper “villanova” (“new city”) in the form of an isosceles triangle fortified with powerful bastions, six towers, and intersected by a modern network of roads around which one sees the manors and the homes of the most important families. Within the fortress, only a triangular tower of the ancient castle remains, while the Baroque Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista flanked by a Romanesque-Gothic bell tower where a marble work by Giulio Monteverde, the sculptor from Bistagno, can admired.
