Bosco Marengo (AL)

The former Santa Croce convent with its monumental Renaissance structure is the symbol of Bosco Marengo, a town which you find near the Orba River on Alessandria’s plain. The Santa Croce Complex, one of the most important from the second half of the Italian 16th century, was the dream of Michele Ghislieri, who, once voted in as pope with the name Pio the 5th in 1566 (he has been the only pope from Piedmont), wanted to build a large convent and church in his native land, which would then gather his remains in the end. It is one of the first important construction sites where the Tuscan-Roman culture is found in the heart of northern Italy; it’s enough just to remember Giorgio Vasari’s cycle of paintings, but here we also have the application of new ideas and new images spreading from the Counter Reformation to the day following the Council of Trent. The former Santa Croce convent, after several interventions and recoveries, has become the seat of the World Political Forum.
