Barolo (CN)
It is the capital of the “King” of wines. Barolo is a splendid town with medieval origins, surrounded by the hills of the Langhe, and is one of the eleven communities where the grapes from the “Nebbiolo” vines, used for producing Barolo wine, can be cultivated. A showcase for this precious “nectar” with its brilliant red garnet color and intense bouquet, is Barolo’s Regional Wine Cellar (enoteca) and the Ethnographic- Oenological Museum housed in the 11th century Falletti Castle which dominates the historical center of the city. Within the castle, visitors may tour the “piano nobile” (“noble floor” –the second floor), where a three thousand volume library covering the 15th century through the 19th century is located and which was once entrusted to the care of the patriot Silvio Pellico when he arrived in Barolo after his prison stay in Spielberg. Also striking is the panorama overlooking the hills of the Lower Langhe, which can be viewed from the terrace of the manor. It was, in fact, the last Marchioness Falletti, great grand-daughter of the Sun King’s famous minister, who carried out the first innovative choices in the field of wine and undertook the promotion of Barolo, giving a large quantity of it as a gift to King Charles Albert. There is also a second castle that is filled with legends and anecdotes: the Volta Castle, which rises up, not too far away, on the road that leads to La Morra. Barolo is place that attracts tourism, including international tourism, thanks to the fame of its wines and to the numerous events organized during the year, such as the “The Barolo Wine Festival” that is held on the second Sunday of September.
