Cities
Borgo San Dalmazzo (CN)
The flatland’s gate to the Alps and to France, Borgo San Dalmazzo rose up during the Roman Era at the entrance of three alpine valleys: Strura, Gesso, and Vermenagna. The city is the undisputed capital of edible snail breeding, specifically the breeding of the “Helix Pomatia Alpina” species, which finds ideal conditions to prosper in this valley. In order to study them, a research center has been set up, but the most important event dedicated to Borgo’s snails is the annual Fiera Fredda (Cold Fair), a national consumer exhibition which is a chance to discover the tastiest recipes starring snails. The medieval historical center still has traces of the wall that, in ancient times, protected the area defensively. The entrance gate was placed in correspondence to the majestic Civic Tower in terra cotta. Also the Chapel of Sant’Anna, cited since 1505, and the Chapel of San Rocco are worth mentioning. In fact, the road that leads to the Monserrato Sanctuary, a place with a striking vista over Cuneo’s plain, over the valleys, and of the top of the Bisalta Massif, begins at the Chapel of San Rocco. Also found in Monserrato’s public area is the open amphitheater, which is the seat of musical shows and cultural events.
