Cities
Boves (CN)
Its recent history was marked the WWII, during which, the Nazi-Fascist forces hammered down several times - destroying, in the process, the historical center – in order to weaken the partisan forces from the surrounding area. Due to this tragic experience, Boves received the gold medal for military valor and the gold medal for civil valor and, in 1984, chose to give itself the title of “Peace Capital” (“Capoluogo di Pace”) and to begin a school actively committed in educating “citizens to construct their lives without selfishness and ambiguity in order to grow up generous and with full respect for everything and for everyone, well aware of the basic principles of human rights”. Exploring the outskirts can be an experience filled with surprises. Not far from the center, is the 16th century Chapel of San Francesco with a richly frescoed interior. Also, the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Boschi (Madonna of the Woods) is an interesting discovery; inside, there are frescos from the 15th to the 18th century, with the most interesting being the two cycles of frescos portraying the Passion and the Universal Judgment attributed to the unknown “master of Cigliè”. It is interesting that in this Universal Judgment many passages were so faithfully taken from Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel.
