Castiglione Falletto (CN)

As in the time of knights and ladies, the imposing quadrangular fortress still dominates the undisputed Castiglione, a “Castrum et villa” that has kept the unchanging look and allure of when it was a fiefdom of the Marquis of Saluzzo. Taking the main road that leads to the fortalice, you pass the square, which was once called “balada” because it was used for dancing during local festivals, and the castle square, oftentimes transformed into playing field for a fist ball game “alla pantalera”, a traditional Piedmont sport. At the end of the castle square, a narrow walkway leads to the Church of San Lorenzo, a perfect observation point to look out over the vineyards of the Lower Langhe and the Serralunga Castle. At the foot of the castle, is the municipal building, which has a completely underground floor – a good example of a Piedmont “crota” (cantina) used to conserve wine and food – where the city has its cantina and where all Castiglione Falletto’s wine producers and bottlers present their own products. This is the land of the prized vines of Barolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto d’Alba and a place that offers particularly striking tours on foot, on horseback, or on a mountain bike.
