Cortemilia - Piemonte Feel

Cities

Cortemilia (CN)

Hazelnuts are one of those products that make up the flavors of Piedmont. What would Turin’s Gianduiotti be otherwise? What flavor would spreadable chocolate cream have? The greatest cultivation of the “Piedmont Hazelnut” (which has received the Typical Geographic Indication mark) is concentrated in Cortemilia where the “tonda gentile delle Lange” reigns. Here, hazelnut cake is a traditional sweet and, given that a great deal of the local economy is based on this plant, even a fraternity was founded, which has its seat in the 18th century Palazzo Rabino. Cortemilia has remained, over time, the main administrative and commercial center of the Bormida Valley and the High Langhe, maintaining the memory of the period when it was supported by lords in the castle ruins built on the city. The Bormida River divides the two ancient hamlets of San Michele and San Pantaleo. Sandstone was greatly used in building both and also used in terracing the hills of Monte Oliveto. In fact, it was to these ingenious works by people that the Eco-Museum of Terracing and Vines (Ecomuseo dei Terrazzamenti e delle Vite) was dedicated.
