Cities
Ceva (CN)
The city has always been a place of passage for the traffic that links the western Ligurian Riviera to southern Piedmont. This is the reason, that for a long time, it was also a military citadel against foreign armies descending from the Alps. Although very little remains of the impressive city walls or of the 16th century fort that dominated it, Ceva still carries the signs of its history in its porticos in the historical center, in its narrow streets, and in the surrounding homes. On a hill lapped by the waters of the Tanaro River and the Cevetta Stream, the Pallavicino Castle (16th century), the residency of the noble family carrying the same name, was built. Besides the Duomo, begun in the mid-17th century and not completed until the 19th century, both the Church of the Archconfraternity of Saint Mary and Saint Catherine (Chiesa dell”Arciconfraternita di Santa Maria e Santa Caterina) designed in the 18th century by Guarino Guarini and completed by Francesco Gallo and the Carlo Marenco City Theater inaugurated in 1861 deserve a visit. On the third Sunday of every September, Ceva hosts the Mushroom Exhibit, an internationally known mycological review that shines the spotlight on a product that is a characteristic of this area, along with white truffles, and the raising of a local breed of calf.
