Clavesana (CN)
Boccaccio drew the figure of Berta di Clavesana, the lady of the castle who “among all other women in the world, was very beautiful and very courageous” in the fifth book of the Decameron. The only traces remaining of her castle, which was the center of the Marquisate of Clavesana, are some remains of the border wall, which for some time has been included in the structure of the homes on Via Vecchia. Instead, jutting out over the Tanaro River, the castle of the Conti Caramelli (Caramelli Counts), a manor built in the 17th century, can be admired. In Clavesana, the pleasures of good eating are satisfied with truffles, hazelnuts, and excellent wines from the Dolcetto DOC grapes, which are cultivated on the city’s communal lands. Two must-sees are the Church of San Michele Arcangelo and confraternity of the Battuti Bianchi, both in the Baroque style.
