Borgone Susa (TO)
Borgone Susa is a place with very ancient beginnings. Recent archeological work has brought findings in clay to light that date back to the Neolithic, to the Chalcolithic and to the Bronze Age, along with various rock engravings in “coppelliformi” (in the form of cupels or bowls [coppelle]). Hidden in the wilds of Borgone Susa, the “Mohammed” (“Maometto”) is a funerary stele showing a strange pagan god with a cape on his shoulders and with his arms raised to the sky. Those living in the valley have always called it Mohammed, seeing the prophet in the sculpture, but the most reliable theory is the one that sees Jupiter Dolicheno, a god worshipped by roman soldiers in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. in the area around, in fact, Borgone, where the border between the Roman Empire and the Kingdom of King Cozio fell along the route that led to Gaul.
