Caluso (TO)

The name of this town in the Canavese area is often directly linked to its wine, Erbaluce. The climate is particularly sweet and healthy in Caluso, characterized by mild winters, early springs, breezy summers, and mostly sunny autumns, all which favor grapes that ripen earlier than in other places in the area. The well-known Caluso Passito, a DOC (denomination of controlled origin) wine, also comes from the grape of the Erbaluce vine. The Serra Wine Cellar (Enoteca della Serra) in the Roppolo Castle near Lake Viverone, is certainly the ideal setting to taste this wine. Although the town is prevalently rural, it has distinguished itself for its artisanship over time and in the areas of textiles and metallurgy. In particular, a cotton mill and a metal works shop, which were installed in 1884, have contributed to giving Calusa a complex and well-defined economic and social character. The Buchi Cotton Mill, operational until 1925, became an important data processing seat in the ‘70’s, which gave a considerable boost to the area’s economy up until the 2000 threshold.
