Cambiano (TO)

Munlab, the Ecomuseo dell’Argilla (the Ecomuseum of Clay), has its seat in Cambiano. In fact, the area over which the city extends, is characterized by a clay soil; its subsoil is made-up of major sedimentary rock deposits, which were carried off by the movement of whirling waters for millions of years. The history of Cambiano is tied to the furnace; active since 1907, it has been able to enlarge and renew itself over time. The innovation of production techniques has led to four “migrations” of machines in just as many new buildings. Today, now that the furnace (the one used for extraction) is in the adjacent cave, the “Permanent Space Furnace” (La Fornace Spazio Permanente) Association has reopened the doors of the old buildings to students and visitors, transforming the buildings into a museum that contributes to the material culture of bricks. The exhausted parts of the cave have, instead, become an oasis for the area’s fauna.
