Cisterna d'Asti (AT)
The town, a medieval hamlet with an urban lay-out, is dominated by a castle and a parish church. Its name, already documented in 980, almost certainly comes from the Latin “cisterna” or rather water well. In fact, still today, one of the main rooms in the castle has a large well, once used by all the residents. At present, the ancient fortress, dating back between the 11th and the 12th century, has a 17th century look due to the alterations it underwent at that time. It is the seat of the Museo di Arti e Mestieri di un Tempo (a museum of epoch arts and trades) which has a noteworthy collection of objects representing Piedmont’s tangible culture in the period between the 17th century and the 20th century. Major examples of 17th century art are kept in the parish church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, where there is a splendid wood altar entirely painted black.
