Cities
Cortazzone (AT)
The town is at the top of a green hill dominated by a castle and the parish church of San Secondo. The castle, built during the Middle Ages, was assaulted by French troops during the War of Spanish Succession (1706) and was largely reconstructed in 1750. Not withstanding this, the castle still has its strong walls and square towers. Even the parish church was entirely reconstructed at the end of the 18th century and today has a Neo-Gothic facade and bell tower. The city’s symbolic monument is, in any case, the Romanesque Church of San Secondo that rises up on a hill opposite the town. The façade - in its well conserved primitive form - is in the Neo-Gothic style, is facing west, has only a single central portal, is largely covered in sand, and has fascinating zoomorphic, phitomorphic, and anthropomorphic ornamentation. The interior of the three-nave church is characterized by Gothic arches, richly sculpted capitals, and the 14th century fresco depicting Christ between two saints.
