Costigliole d'Asti (AT)

Located between the Tanaro and the Tinella Valleys, this town’s land has a culture of farming and wine producing. Barbera DOC (a wine with denomination of controlled origin certification) and the exquisite Motta “square” pepper are the true showpieces. The town is dominated by a majestic castle where such lofty characters as the Marquis Filippo Asinari and the Countess di Castiglione lived. Built in the 13th century, it has undergone various transformations. The present design is due, in great part, to the restructuring carried out in the 19th century which adapted the castle to the Neo-Gothic taste of the time. The castle is quadrangular with four circular towers. The castle hosts, in its interior, major events such as the “Barbera Auction”, the ICIF (Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners) where cooks from the world over learn the secrets of Italian wine and food from a prestigious teaching staff of chefs, and the Grinzane Cavour Prize’s Cultural Park. Among Costogliole’s artistic merits, the Parish Church of Nostra Signora di Loreto in the heart of the old town stands out. Documented since the 14th century, it was reconstructed in the first years of the 19th century through an ordinance from the Asinari di San Marzano. Among its 19th century furnishings, the high altar stands out in polychrome marble following the design of Juvarra.
