Cities
Moncalvo (AT)
As the imposing remains of the medieval fortress and the remains of numerous other important buildings attest, Moncalvo has a rich history. It is one of the main towns in the province of Asti, and known as the place where the painter Gugliemo Caccia – called Moncalvo – worked. The town, which looks out over the hills of Monferrato, is popular for the beauty of it landscapes. Among the town’s artistic points, the 12th century Church of San Francesco, restructured in 1272, has particular interest. Inside, important artistic works - among them the canvases of Moncalvo and of his daughter, Orsola - can be seen, as well as the ashes of illustrious people in the burial chamber, including those of various Marquis from Monferrato. Another very important building, from an historical point of view, is the former synagogue. The presence of a large Jewish community in this area, the last members of which left the city at the end of WWII, has been documented. Moncalvo’s tourist trade is tied to wine, food, and the numerous events held during the year, including the National Truffle Fair held in October.
