Montiglio (AT)

Set on a hill along the border with the province of Alessandria, Montiglio boasts a striking and panoramic setting. The history of this town, which came into being in 1998 with the union of three separate towns – Montiglio, Colcavagno, and Scandeluzza, is subdivided. The imposing castle, which dominates the town, testifies that during the time of the wars for possession of Monferrato, the town was fought over. Originally from the 13th century, destroyed at the beginning of the 14th century, and rebuilt during the 15th century, it has a particularly complex layout. The distinctive elongated and irregular “L- shape” is what remains of the more complex “U- shaped” structure. Located is in the park, the Chapel of Sant’Andrea in the Romanesque-Gothic style, has one of the most important 14th century fresco cycles in Piedmont. Not too far from town, is the Parish Church of San Lorenzo, one of the most significant Romanesque monuments in the province of Asti. Other than its history, Montiglio is famous for its sundials – almost fifty of them – created or restored by Montiglio’s own Mario Tebenghi.
