Cities

Nizza Monferrato (AT)

This is the most important town in the Belbo Valley. Rising up around the ancient San Giovanni in Lanero Abbey during the first years of 13th century, it is a city that fills the pages of history, from the pages written about the feudal struggles to much more recent pages tied to the dramatic experiences of the Resistance. This is why the city’s artistic expressions are so vast and diverse. The artistic testaments from the medieval period are particularly interesting, such as the square tower that stands out next to City Hall. The people of Nizza have become very attached to this structure and its bell that rang out in the past to warn of imminent danger or to invite citizens to gather. Farming has always been one of the city’s main economic resources and today the city is an important center of wine production with high quality wines such as “Nizza”, which is not a new wine but rather a new designation for a wine with a long tradition - a Barbera d’Asti Superiore produced in a limited area of 18 communities around Nizza Monferrrato. Another typical product, not to mention a Presidio of Slow Food, is the cardoon “gobbo” (“twisted”), considered an absolute jewel equal to the truffle. The variety, which is farmed in this area, called “spadone” (“broadsword”) due to the shape of its leaves and stalk, gets its name “cardo gobbo” from the shape it takes after having been manually processed. There are many wine and gastronomic fairs during the year that offer typical local products to the public, not to mention traditional events such as the “Corsa delle Botti” (“Barrel Race”).
