Cities
Graglia (BI)
Stretching over Vagliumina’s 500 meters to the Colma di Mombarone (about 2,300 meters), it has the largest land area of any community in the Valley dell’Elvo and the Serra Morenica. Many important structures characterize both the center of the town as well as centers of the hamlets that form the community. The Graglia Sanctuary, a true and proper architectural and panoramic complex stretching out towards the Mombarone massif, is particularly important. Inspired by Varallo’s Sacro Monte, it was built in the first years of the 1600’s and consists of the monumental Church of the Madonna of Loreto and of an imposing Hospice. Major subalpine artists such as Pietro Arduzzi and Bernardo Antonio Vittone, who designed the Greek cross floor plan, worked on the construction. During the 19th century, it was very popular with illustrious people such as Giuseppe Giacosa, Giosue Carducci, Eleonara Duse, and Giovanni Giolitti due to its well-known hydrotherapy.
