Masserano (BI)

Its land, part plain and part hills, includes a good part of the Baraggia (moor), a protected natural area with a very interesting landscape. Here, among the broad uncultivated areas, diverse habitats are found (from marshes to swamps) and many animal and plant species both typical and rare such as the Iris Sibirica, an iridaceous with blue-violet flowers of Asian origin, or the white stork. Founded in the tenth century, Masserano is a town filled with history and interesting artistic points. In this striking ancient hamlet, even house walls hold precious works of art. This is typified in two ancient stone sculptures, one showing a pagan god and the other a knight on horseback, which decorate two homes in the town’s historical center. Quite spectacular is the Church of San Teonesto. A long cobble-stoned ramp is the way in to this structure with a 13th century gabled facade and Romanesque bell tower to which the late 14th century Collegiate Church of the Annunziata has been annexed.
