Ala di Stura (TO)

It is a small alpine town in the Lanzo Valley, very popular with illustrious members of the House of Savoy and with men of science and culture such as Guglielmo Marconi and Luigi Einaudi especially during the first half of the last century. Today, the town is made-up of various hamlets scattered mostly on the left side of the Stura River and continues to be a tourist destination both in winter and in summer. Among the numerous artistic points of interest in this town in the Valley d’Ala is the “Ponte delle Scale” (“The Step Bridge”) which connects Ala to Ceres, built in stone with due Gothic arches in 1585, it was rebuilt in later times with only one arch - as it remains today; the “Casa della Dogana” (“Custom Agent’s House”) is an ancient squared tower from medieval times; the “Gorgia” (“Gullet”), a waterfall formed by the waters of the Stura, which first fall ten meters into a natural basin and then from there, into a 65 meter chasm; the Sanctuary of the Grotta di Lourdes, created in 1912, where a statue of the Virgin Mary, created by Leonardo Bistolfi, is found. Also quite interesting are the popular frescos in the various hamlets which make-up the community of Ala di Stura.
