Balme (TO)

It is the highest town in the Lanzo Valley, the last one in the Valley of Ala di Stura, surrounded by woods and splendid mountains. Balme has always been a favored destination for summer and winter tourism, the starting point for strolls and treks, a meeting point for climbers and skiers. This small alpine hamlet was the birthplace, in the 19th century, of famous alpine guides such as Antonio Castagneti nicknamed “Toni dei Tuffi” (“Leaping Tony”): his first forty-six climbs are still remembered and place him among the first climbers for his era. A genuine and original character during the heroic time of alpine climbing, Castagneti disappeared in 1890 on the ice of Mont Blanc; the Museum of Alpine Guides is dedicated to him. In the area of Balme, unique landscapes and areas of natural interest are found. First among them: the Pian della Musa, a vast grassy oblong-shaped plain 1,708 meters high surrounded by the Alps and such high summits as the Uia di Ciamarella (3,637 meters).
