Garessio (CN)
Water with thermal properties and a winter sports station (Garessio 2000, located on the Colle di Casotto at 1,370 meters, a natural gulf between the Valle Tanaro and the Valle di Casotto, 12 kilometers from the center of Garessio) are the main points of interest in the mountains that serves as a backdrop to Garessio, a town the grew up near the range, beneath which, there is a dense network of caves and tunnels – some dropping down to sea level from entrances at 2,000 meters. The town’s historical center is Borgo Maggiore, which has maintained its medieval look. Here, you can see both the Church della Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria designed by Francesco Gallo as well as the Church della Confraternita di San Giovanni. The latter, every four years on the evening of Good Friday, organizes the recital of the Mortorio, a sacred representation of the Passion and the Deposition from the Cross which goes back to at least 1433 and is still staged today as it was in 1750. Near Val Casotto, is the Casotto Royal Castle; originating as a monastery in 1297, it was transformed into a castle and summer residency after it was acquired by the Savoy.
