Guarene (CN)
Its historic center still, today, maintains the signs of medieval military architecture. Guarene, in fact, is located at a strategic position: it dominates both the Tanaro Valley as well as the valley of Alba, offering a splendid vista over the entire surrounding territory. The castle is an example of Piedmont Baroque; it was begun in 1726, as requested by Carlo Giacinto Roero, in order to transform the ancient defensive fortress. Inside the castle, the “Chinese rooms” are particularly interesting with tapestries from the India Company, as are the “bishop’s” rooms furnished with 18th century “flag” embroidery. The castle’s exterior, instead, has maintained the original Italian-style garden. The Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, an 18th century building with finely decorated vaulted rooms characterized by continuously alternating levels, looks out over the main square. Since 1997, after a complete restoration, the Palazzo has been the seat of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation for the Arts, offering visitors a comparison between classic 18th century art and new artistic tendencies. Prized vineyards of Roero Arneis and Nebbiolo as well as fruit plants such as the “madernassa” pear have found a spot on the hills surrounding the town.
