Limone Piemonte (CN)

Skiing, snowboarding, skybobbing, paragliding, and alpine skiing are only a few of the possibilities offered at the Riserva Bianca, the ski area that brings together the Limone Piemonte ski lifts. This tourist spot in Val Vermenagna owes its importance to the ancient Monte Cornio pass, the Colle di Tenda, which has always been a major communication route between the Ligurian Riviera, the Costa Azzurra, and Piedmont – thus its name, “Mountain of the Two Rivieras”. Begun as a vacation resort and summer holiday spot around the end of the 19th century, it became, in the beginning of the 20th century, one of the top Italian destinations for winter sports. Its geographic location makes it a popular destination all year round thanks to its temperate alpine climate, a result of its closeness to the sea. The historical center has the characteristic aspect of an alpine community and has maintained its network of narrow streets and stone houses with wood balconies almost entirely intact. Near the Piazza del Municipio, the Gothic Parish Church di San Pietro in Vincoli rises up; on the lunette above the main door, there is an important 15th century fresco depicting the Deposition from the Cross. Also worth a stop in the surrounding area are: the historical center of Limoneto, which you can also walk to by taking the suggestive “via romana”; the Alpe di Papa Giovanni (Pope John’s Alp), an oasis of spirituality springing from the characteristic restructuring and recuperation of a hamlet; and Napoleon’s tunnel, a testament to the attempt (undertaken in 1614 and then resumed in the beginning of the 19th century) to go beyond the hill through a tunnel, finally carried out at a lower elevation in 1882.
