Monteu Roero (CN)

Tales and legends wrap around little Monteu Roero, a town surrounded by orchards, vineyards of Nebbiolo and Arneis grapes, and age-old woods. It is said that in 1158, in the Biandrate Castle, Emperor Barbarossa found refuge in order to escape from a plague epidemic. The castle seen today, instead, is the one that took its place; remodeled by the Roero family, it maintains frescos and 17th century ornamentation inside. Another tale has to do with the Church di San Pietro di Novelle in the Occhetti neighborhood; rebuilt in 1929 on the site of an ancient parish church dating back to the 10th century, popular legend has it that the bell tower casts a shadow for one hour a day on a treasure.
