What distinguishes Borgofranco from the other towns in Canavese is its extraordinary grouping of “Balmetti”, unusual natural cantinas dug out of moraine rock which take advantage of the air current at a constant temperature, the so-called “ore” (from the Latin aura: breeze, breath), coming from natural cavities and produced by very particular geo-natural occurrences. Three hundred and twelve buildings have been out-fitted since ancient times for the preservation of wine and agricultural products. The most important historical building is Palazzo Marini, an imposing “L-shaped” 15th century structure about 1,900 squared meters large.
