Buttigliera Alta (TO)
Buta: bottle; butalin: small cask. The etymology of the name, obviously a reference to wine and vineyards and to wood and woods, is uncertain and imaginative. The area of Buttigliera Alta, at the entrance to the Susa Valley between Sangone and the Dora Riparia, includes a hilly part and a flat part. On the flat part, the plains, the hamlet of Ferriera was created in 1890 in memory of La Ferriere Sous Jougne, a town with Vandal origins where a factory was installed for the production of nails for shoes and wire. Not too far from Buttigliera, is one of the best known architectural establishments in the Susa Valley: The Abby of Sant’Antonio di Ranverso, founded by the Anthonines in the 12th century to give hospitality to pilgrims and healing to the sick.
