Manta (CN)
The crown of the Cozie Alps, dominated by the Monviso massif, is the frame of this great castle that rises up just outside of Saluzzo on a one of the hills in the Varaita Valley. In 1416, Valerano, first Count of Manta and Verzuolo, received, in fief, the town and also the fortress that dominates it - and chose this as his first home. He created an exotic garden and enlarged the castle, transforming it into one of the most important manors in Piedmont. Inside, in the Sala Baronale, the unknown Master of Manta created an exceptional series of frescoes in the International Gothic style. The characters are those from the knightly tale, “Le Chevalier Errant” written Valerano’s father. Eighteen heroes and heroines taken from the Biblical world, mythology, and history represent, through valor and wisdom, the first nine Marquis do Saluzzo and their respective consorts. In the same Sala, is the legendary Fountain of Youth, able to restore the vigor of youth to those who immerge themselves. From the same period, is the Parish Church of Santa Maria del Castello, which has a fresco cycle showing the Passion of the Christ and the rich ornamentation from the funeral chapel of the Marquis di Saluzzo, Michele Antonio, in its presbytery. Other frescos – examples of 15th century Saluzzo – are found in the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria del Monastero, the oldest religious structure in Manta.
