Santo Stefano Belbo (CN)

Moscato d’Asti is the international calling card for this land, thick with rows of moscato grape vines introduced in the beginning in the 10th century by Benedictine monks from the now lost San Gaudenzio Abbey. Santo Stefano Belbo is also the birth place of Cesare Pavese, one of the great figures in 20th century Italian literature. Many of the places mentioned in his books were, therefore, inspired by these hills, where the flames of bonfires still shine in spring when the farmers burn the wood of old grape vines. In memory of the deceased writer, a permanent exhibit of his photos and manuscripts has been set up in his birth home. In the complex ,which consists of the Church, consecrated in the 13th century to San Giacomo and to San Cristoforo, and the adjacent building, the Cesare Pavese Study Center has found a space; this project consists of offices, archives, a library, and a hall for meetings, shows, and exhibits.
