Cities

Savigliano (CN)

The city was chosen by the Dukes of Savoy as the new home of the University of Turin in the 15th century, but the experiment only lasted a couple of years and certainly was not helped by Cristoforo Beggiami’s opening of a typography business in 1470, the first in Piedmont to use moveable characters and to begin the long history of Savigliano’s typography industry. The completion of the Torino-Savigliano line in 1853 – the King of Sardinia’s first railroad line – was a new development in the local economy. A few years later, Savigliano’s Societa Nazionale delle Officine was created to produce material for carriages, which would then become part of the Fiat Ferroviaria for many years. Locomotives and antique vehicles are now exhibited in the Museo Ferroviario Piemontese (Piedmont Railroad Museum) inaugurated in 2001. The heart of the city is the medieval Piazza Santarosa, where the ancient Town Hall and the small palazzos, built by the noble families who came from the countryside, can be found; the Arco di Trionfo was built in 1585 to celebrate the Dukes of Savoy. The inauguration of the Milanollo Theater goes back to 1836; on its Neo-Classic façade, statues of Comedy and Tragedy stand out, as does the one for the Genius of Glory that crowns music and Poetry stand out.
