Valdieri (CN)

The natural gifts offered by the Gesso Valley and the nearby Alpi Marittime Nature Park had already convinced the Savoy to claim the entire area as their hunting grounds and to spend summers in the hamlet of Sant’Anna di Valieri or at the Pian del Valasco Hunting Lodge. It was Vittorio Emaneule II who placed the first stone in the Valdieri Thermal Baths, where today, the Alpino Valdieri Botanical Garden has been created as well, with almost 450 species of plants found in the Park. A good view of the valley’s panorama can be seen, while climbing to the center of the town, from the scenic spot of the Sanctuary di Madonna del Colletto; here, a stone recalls that on September 12, 1943, this place was the theater of the partisan constitution which gave birth to the Justice and Liberty Brigade. Valdieri attracts tourism from trekking and open air sports lovers all year round, but is also promoting tourism inspired by the rediscovery and the understanding of the history and traditions of the alpine towns in the Gesso Valley. The best known, is the live nativity scene, which conjures-up ancient trades, staged for three days during the Christmas holidays by the residents of the hamlet of Andonno every year.
