Arquata Scrivia (AL)
Not far from the ruins of the Roman city of Libarna, Arquata Scrivia rises up and can boast of a very characteristic historical center that dates back to the Middle Ages and where visitors can admire the Palazzo Spinola – once the home of noble feudal families and now the seat of the Town Hall, and the Church di San Giacomo with a five-nave interior and paintings from the Ligurain Baroque School. Every year during the Christmas season, along Via Interiore, the shops of ancient tradesmen are recreated and life-size wooden and papier-mache statutes are place on the street – all to recreate a life-size nativity scene. In Arquata, there is a small English cemetery, a reminder of when the city had a base - which could have had 36,000 men - of the British armed forces in Italy in 1917.
