Castelnuovo Scrivia (AL)
Shakespeare may owe a debt to this town in the province of Alessandria and to its most illustrious son, Matteo Maria Bandello. Poet and writer who lived between 1484 and 1561, Bandello was, in fact, the author of many short – oftentimes racy – novels including one entitled “Giulietta e Romeo” (“Romeo and Juliet”) which may have inspired the great English bard. The house where he was born still exists in the historical center and the Torriani and Bandello Castle – better known as Palazzo Pretorio – was built on the main square; just in front, is the Romanesque Parish Church di Santi Pietro e Paolo from the 12th century. Also, the imposing Palazzo Centurione is interesting and a good example of Genovese architecture from the 17th century; now home to City Hall, it has an elegant groin portico and, in the four interior rooms which have remained intact, the City Museum is located with a rich collection of archeological findings from the Stone Age to the Roman Era.
