Cella Monte (AL)
The sandstone in this area - from the Miocene Age – has been used as a building material, as in the case of the “Pietra da Cantoni”, a sandstone which was very important, from a construction point of view, in the past due to its compact quality and which, more recently, has been front and center in the recuperation of the heritage of local construction. This is a heritage that can boast of the “infernot”, small architectural jewels dug out of the tuff rock in order to store bottles of prized wine, those that are kept over the years in memory of some important event. The hills surrounding the town are cultivated with the vines that give Barbera and Grignolino wines and the nearby Valle di Ghenza is famous for white truffles. According to local tradition, the town was defended by five fortresses, of which only two exist today: the Castello degli Ardizzone and the Casa forte dei Francia.
