Gavi (AL)

The imposing fort, which dominates the town, was built by the Genovese starting in 1626 under the direction of Fra Vincenzo da Fiorenzuolo, transforming the pre-existing castle into the present day powerful fortress, which was proclaimed a national monument in 1908. The area of Gavi is famous, above all, for its white Cortese wine, which received DOCG (Denomination of Controlled Origin Guaranteed) certification in 1998. The wine-producing tradition also offers an interesting output of Dolcetto and Barbera, wines that accompany local dishes that have a Ligurian influence, given the town’s strategic position in the hills of the Ligurian-Piedmontese Apennines. Gavi’s oldest and most important monument is the Parish Church dedicated to San Giacomo, a Romanesque church which has many precious works of art inside.
