Casale Monferrato (AL)

The powerful bastions, which made Casale one of the most important strongholds in Europe, no longer exist, but the 14th century hexagonal castle has remained to testify to the city’s long military history. Casale was, for a long time, the capital of the small but powerful pre-unification state of the Marquisate of the Monferrato, who governed this area for eight hundred years until the threshold of the 18th century. Today, the city’s name is known for major industrial production, for a very important antiques market that brings in thousands of visitors every month, and as the birthplace, in1878, of krumiri, the cookies with the characteristic shape inspired by the handle bar mustache of Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy.
The historical center is mostly in the Baroque style because, in the 1700’s, the city was the home of many noble families, of rich bourgeoisie, and of Savoy officials who had palazzi and churches built.
Among the most significant structures are the 60-meter city tower and the 12th century Cathedral di Sant’Evasio characterized by the peculiarity of its narthex considered a masterpiece of statics and studied throughout the world. Inside the cathedral, is the 18th century chapel designed by Benedetto Alfieri and a crucifix in black wood with Christ in gilded silver plate from the 11th century. In the old Jewish ghetto, it is possible to visit the synagogue, built in 1595, which houses the Jewish Museum complex including the Museum of Art and Ancient Jewish History (Museo d’Arte e Storia Antica Ebraica) and the Museum of Lights (Museo dei Lumi). Also, the1780 City Theater is significant with its important theatrical seasons. There are many high-profile Baroque buildings, including: the palazzo dedicated to San Giorgio – City Hall, Palazzo Gozzani di Treville, Palazzo Ottolenghi, and Palazzo Mumico. Older, is Palazzo Travisi’s Renaissance cloister, as well as 15th century Palazzo Anna d’Alencon. Besides the other prized Baroque churches, there are ancient oratories and former convents.
