Cities
Ovada (AL)
Located in Alto Monferrrato at the entrance to the Ligurian pre-alpine valleys, Ovada is a Piedmont city deeply marked by the influence of Ligurian history and culture. In fact, the sunny colors, faded over time, on the buildings and strongholds in the city center are typically Ligurian, as are the narrow streets that they look out over, which are called “carrugi” from the Genovese dialect.
The traditional cuisine is an area where the flavors of two regions merge and overlap. Typical products from Ovada are, in fact, ravioli and white truffles, as are focaccia (a flatbread) and farinata (a pancake). Every dish must be accompanied by Docetto di Ovada, the characteristic and locally-produced DOC wine that melds the two gastronomic cultures. In the Oratory della SS. Trinita, which is at the end of a large, stone staircase, Ovada’s two most important works of art are kept: a wooden crucifix by Domenico Bissoni and, most important, a processional wood grouping depicting the decapitation of Saint John the Baptist by Anton Maria Maragliano. Both are carried during the June 24th procession through the streets of Ovada, which, every year, recreates a tradition that is ancient and deeply emotional for the city.
