Rocca Grimalda (AL)
This town, located on the summit of a rocky spur with its castle and its alleys reminiscent of ancient battles, has kept the characteristic allure of a medieval hamlet. Its Mask Museum houses an original collection of Italian and foreign costumes, but especially dedicates space to the “Lachera”, a local tradition half-way between folklore dance and an expiatory cortege that goes from farmstead to farmstead, weaving through the countryside and the city streets during Carnival. This custom has its root in a supposed popular rebellion against the “jus primae noctis” (droit de seigneur – lord’s right) imposed by the feudal landowners of Rocca in the 13th century. The last Sunday of August is traditionally dedicated to the “Peirbuieira Festival”, a bean and homemade lasagna dish which can be tasted no where else because the exact recipe is a secret kept in Rocca Grimalda.
