Volpedo (AL)

The painter Giuseppe Pellizza (1868-1907), Volpedo’s most famous citizen, painted his masterpiece, the “Quarto Stato” (“Fourth State”) in one of the town’s little squares. A little square where his most important socially significant works were created, works where he used real peasants from Volpedo as his models, caught as they went –with dignity and determination – to the Palazzo dei Malaspina to state their case. Today, this place is called “Quarto Stato” and the little square appears in its original state: the cobblestones have been cleaned and a street lamp marks the spot where Pellizza set up his easel, while granite slabs indicate where the models posed. The parish church has one of his lesser works, San Luigino, while other works and mementos are kept in his studio, which the city has deemed a museum. The town’s main monument is the 10th century Romanesque Parish Church di San Pietro, which was reworked in the 15th century – the period which the frescos date back to as well. Today, Volpedo’s economy is, for the most part, tied to fruit farming.
