Macugnaga (VB)

Founded around 1265 by the Walsers, a Germanic people originally from the area of Goms (upper Valais, Switzerland), Macugnaga still today maintains the uses, customs, and traditions of this culture. The typical homes in block-bau (mortised larch trunks), the primitive church from the 14th century, and the cemetery all testify to this; also bearing witness is an imposing age-old linden tree (one of the five monumental trees of Piedmont), which legends says was carried over by a woman at the time of the founders, and the Museum-House of Walser Culture which exhibits a rich collection of every-day objects. Located at the foot of Mont Rosa, Macugnaga is a modern tourist stop: popular in the winter for downhill and cross-country skiing, and in the summer for the many activities tied to nature and to the surrounding area – especially mountain climbing, and to such an extent, that it is called the “Himalayan” wall because of its slope (2,500 meters) and the largest stretch of the alpine arc.
