Mondovì (CN)
Mondovì has a tradition of pottery production dating back to the nineteenth century. For more than a hundred years, skilled craftsmen have painted various objects, such as crockery, using bright colours and simple patterns: flowers, birds, landscapes and, of course, the cockerel the symbol of the town’s pottery industry. Today, traces of this traditional activity are still to be found in the workshops of Piazza, the higher area of Mondovì. This is the old town-centre with its characteristic network of narrow streets and the central piazza Maggiore. The buildings which surround this square are of some historical and artistic interest and they include: the Chiesa della Missione with its baroque facade; the old Town Hall; the Palazzo dei Bressani with its Gothic facade and typical battlements; the Cathedral of San Donato, a masterpiece of the architect Francesco Gallo, whose hand can also be seen in the style of the magnificent dome of the nearby Sanctuary of Vicoforte. The Civic Tower dominates the splendid “Belvedere” park where the visitor can enjoy unique views of the plain below and the surrounding Alps.
