Cities

Carmagnola (TO)

Located on the plains between the Langhe and Asti, Carmagnole has always been a large agricultural and commercial center. The presence of a continuous system of porticos (designated place for the liveliest social relationships and for the development of economic activities) that run along the main street in the historical center testify to this. The prize of the town’s economy is the pepper, of which the most extensive quantity of varieties is grown: “quadrato di Asti”, “corno di bue”, “braidese”, and “gigante di Carmagnola” able to reach 7 or 8 hectograms. Delicacies from the earth aside, Carmagnola is known for its monuments and for a certain elegance in its homes and palazzi, all built between the 15th and 16th centuries; structures that mirror the city’s rich history and art. Just consider the Church di Sant’Agostino in the city’s main square. Built at the beginning of the 15th century with contributions from the citizens of Carmagnola, it has undergone various transformations over the centuries. The most important changes are visible on the façade that flaunts a Renaissance entrance and in the almost 90-square-meter increase to the building’s height, which took place during the 18th century.
